What is a Chartered Surveyor?

A Chartered Surveyor assesses properties for defects, future issues or problems. These properties can be either residential or commercial. In the case of residential, they will check everything from the ground up.  By inspecting a property and looking at the site, structure and services you will have sufficient knowledge of any damage, defects or potential dangers that may affect the decisions you make about your property.

What Qualifications Does a Chartered Surveyor Have?

To qualify as a Chartered Surveyor, you need to complete a degree accredited by the RICS. Once you’ve completed your degree you then undergo an Assessment of Professional Competence (APC). You are granted Membership of RICS after your APC Final Assessment. A Chartered Surveyor Apprenticeship takes five years to complete.

RICS is the Royal Institute for Chartered Surveyors. They are the professional body for surveyors. They set and monitor the standards to protect consumers and businesses. These standards include the RICS Rules of Conduct and a number of related mandatory standards which set out the RICS requirements covering competence, ethical conduct, service standards and consumer protection.
